Plant-Biofeedback Investigation

In our practice we use technology as a means to reconnect the human experience with the physical and natural world, integrating nature into the digital age and stimulating lives in ways that were not previously possible.

We envision a future where interaction is organic and very much alive, humanity is sentient and communication among species is fluid. Through investigating plants biofeedback, we can create a universal language for all living beings, a future where we can learn how to read nature, and nature can read us. 

Through digital technology we are able to expand the data collected from the plant when approached, transforming it into sound.

Measurement probes detect variations in conductivity and relay this information to our MIDI controller. Each variation corresponds to a unique signal that when received by the controller translates to a MIDI note. As a result, the stream of messages from the plant becomes sonified. The following projects have been calibrated this way based on the designed environment, but contact is not actually necessary to obtain the same result, the mere presence of the user within a given area is enough to simulate it.

By using the natural world to create a narrative, we invite the users to personally to set their ego’s aside and realize that their bodies are just as much as part of this ecosystem as these plants are, appropiating the use of technology as a tool to requestion our future.

Our installation work is a form of sonifying data, in hope of cultivating awareness connected to plant intelligence. We hope that our research and demonstration will contribute towards a broader understanding of how nature responds to electromagnetic fields. The concept of plant neurobiology is a concept that could modify the way in which we interact with the natural world.

Considering socio-political issues such as global warming created by the economic activities of the humans, we feel it is more important than ever to pay attention to nature.

En nuestra práctica utilizamos la tecnología como una herramienta como para reconectar esta experiencia humana, integrando la naturaleza a la era digital, unificando el diseño de experiencias interactivas, artes audiovisuales y sonido generativo.

Las nociones occidentales de inteligencia parecen en ocasiones haber quedado obsoletas y ser un tanto reduccionistas. Cada entidad tiene la habilidad de modificar su comportamiento para re-organizarse y crear sistemas de mayor complejidad.

Al proponer narrativas alternativas que reflejan sobre la relación entre la naturaleza y tecnología, nos acercamos a las teorías antiespecistas y transhumanistas. En nuestra investigación especulamos sobre escenarios futuros en el que la interacción entre organismos vivos es de forma interconectada.

Previamente hemos investigado la sensibilidad vegetal, analizando la reacción a estímulos mecánicos. A través de bio-retroalimentación somos capaces de explorar un nuevo lenguaje poético entre todos los seres vivos: un futuro en el que podamos aprender a leer la naturaleza y viceversa.

Utilizando programación C++ via Arduino y el software opensource de composición musical, Reaper. Desarrollamos de un controlador MIDI utilizando la biodata obtenida desde cada planta como un input hacia la creación de nuestro instrumento musical electronico.


Al utilizar el entorno natural para construir una narrativa, invitamos a los usuarios a desplazar su ego y replantear su posición dentro del ecosistema.
